01 Where AI Overviews actually appear
Google shows AI Overviews mostly on informational queries: questions, comparisons, how-tos, and increasingly on commercial research like best-of and versus searches. Presence is volatile. Google expands and contracts coverage by query type, market, and month, so a search that triggered an Overview in March may not in June. As of mid-2026 they are a fixture of US results but far from universal.
AI Overviews optimization starts with a map, refreshed monthly because the target moves: which of your money queries trigger Overviews, who gets cited in them, and whether you appear at all.
02 How the cited sources get picked
An Overview is generated from Google's index and grounded in pages its systems consider reliable for that query. Citation is not a copy of the organic top ten. Pages that state an answer plainly, support it with specifics, and carry site-level authority get quoted, sometimes from positions that would never earn a click on their own. That cuts both ways: you can be cited without ranking first, and you can rank first without being cited.
The craft is building pages that make extraction easy and attribution obvious, covered in detail on our AI citations page.
03 The traffic problem nobody prices in
Overviews answer some questions so completely that clicks on those queries fall. Pretending otherwise is bad strategy. The honest response has two parts: win the citation so the remaining clicks and the answer-level brand exposure go to you, and rebalance your content toward assets an Overview cannot replace: original data, tools, calculators, and product pages where the user has to visit to act.
For most brands the queries losing clicks were already low converters. The ones worth defending are the commercial research queries, and those are exactly where citations pay. How this reshapes budgets is covered in our comparison of AI SEO and traditional SEO.
04 What wins the cited slots
Across the Overviews we track, cited pages share a recognizable shape:
- A direct answer in the first screen, not buried under preamble
- Dated statistics with named sources
- Tight scope: one question resolved completely
- Schema.org markup that clarifies what the page is
- Visible authorship and sourcing, so grounding systems can trust the trail
Site authority still gates entry, and authority is earned the way it always was: coverage and links from publications Google trusts. That mechanism is mapped on backlinks for AI trust. None of this guarantees a slot. It raises the probability across many queries, which is the only honest unit of progress in this work.
05 What an AI Overviews program includes
Monthly, we track your query map, rebuild one or two pages into citation candidates, publish or refresh a data asset worth quoting, and continue the press placements that carry site authority. Where a genuine data gap exists in your category, we build the statistic other sites will reference, since being the primary source is the strongest citation position available. The same coverage and links also feed Gemini's grounding in Google Search, so wins here rarely stay confined to Overviews.
Your report shows Overview presence per query family, citations won and lost, and the organic click picture beside it, so gains in one column are never allowed to hide losses in another.
06 What we will not promise
Google adjusts AI Overviews continuously and publishes no citation contract. We will not promise a specific query, a specific slot, or immunity from the next update. We will show you every month whether AI Overviews optimization is earning citations and protecting clicks, and if a quarter of honest effort moves nothing, we say that too and change the plan. Programs run inside our standard retainers, each carrying a minimum number of monthly placements, listed on pricing.
